My church experience has been pretty complete. From attending church camp to graduating from Bible college to serving in ministry, I’ve experienced just about everything church has to offer.
Overall, the experience has left me feeling unsatisfied. American churches prioritize those who are new to the faith over their longstanding members. And they try to make everyone comfortable rather than challenging them to grow.
American churches simply don’t prioritize spiritual maturity. Paul says he preaches “so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ” (Colossians 1:28). He urged his congregations to “move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity” (Hebrews 6:1).
Not so with us. We preach and do ministry so as not to present anyone fully mature in Christ. We teach the basics again and again until it’s obvious we’ll never move beyond them. As a result, our members stop progressing toward spiritual maturity.
That’s why I started blogging. I need more than church has to offer. I need to interact with God’s Word on a deeper level. I need an intellectual and historical approach to faith. And I need to share it with others who are also unsatisfied with church.
This is true even if you aren’t a Christian! Maybe the emotional, surface-level faith on display at most churches has turned you away. I want you to see that pursuing Christian maturity engages your mind as much as your heart.
