Everybody loves a wedding, don’t they? A wedding is a ceremony that celebrates a man and woman taking vows to love each other for the rest of their lives. Sadly, many marriages fall apart and end in divorce. Why? Because the couple spends a lot of time preparing for their wedding but little or no time preparing for their marriage. They fail to realize that the wedding is just the beginning of their lifelong relationship.
A lot of Christians make the same mistake in their relationship with God. They think He expects them to be saved and nothing more. They fail to realize that baptism is just the beginning of their lifelong relationship with Him. Having a relationship with God is the same as having a relationship with anyone else. If you want to grow closer to Him, you have to spend time with Him.
There are many ways to spend time with God:
- Read the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word. He told its authors what to write and made sure they wrote it down correctly. We learn about who He is and what He’s done. We also learn how He expects us to live as His people.
- Pray. Prayer is talking to God. He makes Himself available to us and gives us unrestricted access to Himself. We tell Him what’s going on in our lives and ask Him to guide and direct us. We thank Him for the good things He’s doing and also let Him know what’s bothering us.
- Go to church. The church is made up of God’s people. We meet together on a weekly basis to worship Him. We express that He is worthy of our devotion singing praises to Him. We give a portion of our income to support His work in the world.
- Have fellowship. Fellowship is sharing life with other Christians. We build meaningful and helpful relationships. We talk about what’s going on in our lives and the situations we are facing. We confess the sins that tempt us and pray for each other.
Spending time with God in these ways on a regular basis will help you grow closer to Him. But it’s important to understand how. These habits have no power in and of themselves. Rather, the Holy Spirit uses them to make us more like Jesus. Jesus has a closer relationship with God than anyone. So in order to grow closer to God, we must become more like Jesus. This will produce practical results in how you think, feel, speak, and act in every area of your life.
It’s also important to understand that your relationship with God is ongoing. If you are saved, the Holy Spirit lives within you every moment of every day. And He is always working to make you more like Jesus. It’s tempting to compartmentalize and think the only time we grow closer to God is when we’re doing religious things. But our relationship with Him isn’t limited to these habits. Instead, these habits help us constantly live in a way that brings us closer to Him.
